I think law firms in general rely a bit too much on precedent technology use within other law firms, in terms of their own technology development, and would greatly benefit from gaining insight into technology as used by related but non legal knowledge intensive organisations. For example, I found a visit some years ago to a legal publishing company to view their publication processes and it very beneficial in terms of better understanding how to manage intranet/extranet content. I can think of other industry sectors I'd also like to visit - large tech firms like Google, management consultancy firms, pharmaceutical companies etc.Margaret Merrick, Knowledge Managerhttp://www.algoodbody.ienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-64307027965213058832008-05-08T21:22:00.000-07:002008-05-08T21:22:00.000-07:00I agree with much of the article, but think the vi...I agree with much of the article, but think the view on training is wrong. Getting partners into training sessions is difficult, yes, and it always has been, but we should not therefore give up.

Follow-up one-to-one training is important, but is not a substitute for a proper formally structured training, and distilling an hours training into 10-15 minutes as suggested just means failing to give a proper foundation, and results in poorer use of the system and a heavier support burden for evermore.

As far as who systems should be targetted at, and therefore the level of complexity/sophistication, the answer is everyone and everything. We are clever enough that we are not restricted to a single interface and functionality set for a system - we need different interfaces and functionality for different target groups, so the partners may get a simple high-level one, the average associate another, the tech-savvy ones a third etc. Trying to make do with a single approach and making one-size-fit-all is poor service that satisfies almost no-one.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-8793107144114171972008-04-22T04:54:00.000-07:002008-04-22T04:54:00.000-07:00Lisa and Tom:Congratulations to both of you!Best,M...Lisa and Tom:

Congratulations to both of you!

Best,
MaryMary Abrahamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07437605925715236752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-82456470050249361712008-03-11T14:38:00.000-07:002008-03-11T14:38:00.000-07:00I like where you are going with this this topic. ...I like where you are going with this this topic. I find it necessary to learn how to balance the positive momentum coming from the senior-level clients (e.g. partners, law firm executives, etc.) to an effective solution for the 'day-to-day' users of the solution (e.g. associates, legal assistants, staff attorneys, etc.)

I am all for 'personal visits' also, it helps identify specific concerns for that user in a 'real-time' setting (not the temporary PC at training). And 'on the spot' solutions can usually be provided.

DooleyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-74407206949842055652007-09-13T19:56:00.000-07:002007-09-13T19:56:00.000-07:00Hi Tom,I think that the problem is perhaps bigger ...Hi Tom,

I think that the problem is perhaps bigger than whether or not "knowledge" is missing from titles. The problem from my perspective is that law firms pretty much fell in step with the corporate world in implementation of KM. And to put it mildly, they missed the mark in linking to the big picture.

While I have nothing against the thought of moving in the direction of innovation, I suggest that without the knowledge end of things there won't likely be innovation. I delivered a keynote at an international innovation conference a couple of months ago and spoke of exactly the same thing -- referring to it as "strategic innovation" where innovation is the natural end result of closing knowledge gaps.

So, in law firms or in any part of the corporate world, where the guiding belief was that to "do" KM all you had to do was implement one IT tool or another...the end result was a failure to close knowledge gaps.

For example, in a law firm, being able to quickly retrieve critical knowledge contained in documents residing in the knowledge-base is key. And yet, I've seen few law firms successfully tackle even basic issues such as ensuring the PDF and MS Word documents contain the keywords necessary to improve search capabilities. The end result being that many documents are simply recreated because they cannot be found even by those who initially created them.

So, KM or not, the problem remains. Failure to link the knowledge management efforts to the strategic picture resulted in no closures in knowledge gaps. And failure to link innovation to the bigger picture will also result in failures. It's still the same knowledge gaps.

Dan

Dr. Dan Kirsch, CKM, MKMP, CKMI
COO & Board Member
Knowledge Management Professional Society (KMPro)
Email: COO@KMPro.orgUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17665990897982507811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-8809290905631461512007-08-18T05:04:00.000-07:002007-08-18T05:04:00.000-07:00I'd be happy to see the end of the tag line knowle...I'd be happy to see the end of the tag line knowledge management being applied to what I do. For whatever reason, the term knowledge management seems to have a bad reputation in law firms - perhaps because of early, ineffective and expensive initiatives.

There's no question that the tech component of what I do is huge - BUT if that isn't tied to a thorough understanding of how legal professionals work and think, initiatives won't be successful. For example, there continue to be very easy to use tech solutions presented to lawyers that require "no training". My experience continues to be that without some training or education, these solutions are not as successful as they should be - it's that human element again.

At least in Canada, law firms seem prepared to continue their investment in knowledge sharing/practice enhancement initiatives, even though these are on are the wrong side of the balance sheet.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01583494893017573210noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-7619656880586859222007-07-13T10:12:00.000-07:002007-07-13T10:12:00.000-07:00Workflow is an integral component of Knowledge Man...Workflow is an integral component of Knowledge Management Initiatives. More often than not, I am approached to implement a Knowledge Management System (KMS) where the KMS is the perceived end-all to the information management problem and the process/workflow component is not on the radar. Without standardized (manual or electronic) processes, the KMS becomes a content conversion project that inevitably fails. Current content is converted and the processes for information inception to the end pristine knowledge artifact(s) are not addressed. Ultimately, adding another information silo and useless repository.

WF is code intense and free. It is not a BPM tool but a framework to code workflow processes. K2.net provides a GUI interface to model the workflow after significant coding is complete for each object. Note: I have viewed demos of the new k2 [blackpearl] version and have yet worked with it in production environment. AgilePoint provides out-of-the-box process activities, which need configuration but no code development. Of the three tools, AgilePoint is the only true BPM solution.

Research each tool for yourself and remember Gartner statistics show 85% of IT projects fail to meet objectives whereas 90% of ‘process’ projects succeed.

WF (100% Code: 0% Business Analysis)
K2 (80% Code: 20% Business Analysis)
AgilePoint (20% Code: 80% Business Analysis)

I left off MetaStorm since it wasn't a .NET code base when I trained on it.

Geoffrey Fillar
Sr. Knowledge ManagerAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-80835962387297848342007-06-15T08:53:00.000-07:002007-06-15T08:53:00.000-07:00Development with WWF is certainly not anywhere nea...Development with WWF is certainly not anywhere near as turnkey as some of the off the shelf tools, but at the same time we were able to get a working prototype up and running within 4 weeks. So, at least at our firm, we didn't find it harder, per se, just more time consuming to do some things that aren't out of the box. Vendors adopting WWF are moving in the right direction and certainly firms should explore anything that will accelerate their workflow development.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8516720.post-91873992302232883092007-06-15T08:43:00.000-07:002007-06-15T08:43:00.000-07:00You're absolutely right about the importance of wo...You're absolutely right about the importance of workflow.
